Hi. More a one off camera exercise this but comment also welcome. Had a walk round the plot this morning looking for any signs that Spring is already starting to happen here in Suffolk. A few pics to show what I found - these are over and above quite a few shrubs (some Spring flowering) with clear buds overwintering and other herbaceous plants showing through. Found also bulb growth such as Snowdrops, Crocus, Daffodils and Dwarf Iris. The Arum of course has been flowering all winter thus far. Has anyone else done likewise and if so how about showing what you found. Your primroses and hellebores are lovely! We had one primrose bloom, and three of our hellebores were also in bloom. Now we have frost and snow and I guess they're all ruined. The snowdrops and crocus were beginning to push through, but they were wise and didn't rush it.
There's a few things popping up, but nothing with any blooms, except the Kalanchoes are trying to flower. Even though we tend to have a mild winter, we can still get frosts through February. So... I'm hoping everything just stays "down" for another month.
Hi Droopy - a name would be really nice to use - cheryl. Thanks for the response - it really is now probably the most exciting (certainly to me) time of year with Xmas now over and the New Year seen in - a good one hopefully. As we are for sure agreed we keen gardeners/plant lovers do everything we can to help our cherished plants and related things along. The time is now drawing towards Spring when everything starts on the move again including the Herbaceous plants we tucked away safely for winter now reappearing. What can possibly be more exciting to us than seeing these again and also those other things like the birds getting "togetherly" showing for sure that its gone full circle and its all going to happen again. Great joy for sure!. Ref the birds I have already had Blue Tits looking into a nesting box so live in hope. Be so good to hear others thoughts ref this time of year and to think they share the excitement with me.. Regards.Syd. Its happening!. ( photo / image / picture from Sydney Smith's Garden )
Hi all. A few more signs of Spring. It's great to think that spring is near SOMEWHERE. I am sitting in the depths in a snowy winter here in southern ONTario. Very pretty Primula's. What is the big green leafy plant second from the end? At first glance I thought it was Giant Hogweed and quickly scrolled back to have another look!
Saw my first hellebore bloom this morning and an unopened snow drop. It feels like a mild winter here for January. Your primroses are lovely. Here is my hellebore. January hellebores ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden ) I was very ruthless cutting back my winter blooming heather and didn't expect any flowers, but a few escaped my electric shears. Winter blooming heathers (January) ( photo / image / picture from Jewell's Garden ) It is really good seeing the shades of spring on the horizon.
Sydney, I love your green sprouts, and am green with jealousy! Where I am, we are a long, long way till spring. I know, it is so exciting to see the green return!!
I need some winter blooming plants. It's so depressing out there right now... brown... brown.. and more brown. :'(
Isn't it great to see everything starting to poke through the earth or put our new leaf buds? Spring can't be too far away now.
It is nice to see all that going on over there. Things here are beginning to nreak the surface as well, but not with the gusto of things in your garden. I hope that a cold snap will not set them back, mate.
Jewell, those Heathers are lovely! I am not at all familiar with them, wonder if they grow in zone 5?
Hi all. Good that its starting to happen for you all also. Netty. The plant is an Acanthus mollis and a variety with yellowish young foliage. A grand plant I think but needs plenty of space and once you have it its for ever. Just to mention it I know CA is a huge place but I do have a friend in Oakville Ontario- is this near you?. jewell. Like your Heathers and is your Hellebore the Xmas Rose. I can grow Hellebores generally except that one - just will not stay with me. Kay - cheryl. Spring will happen for you be sure. Eileen. Best time of the year for me - welcoming back all the old friends. sjoerd. Thanks for the kind though and the weather being as fickle as it is these days its hard to forecast. May I say though most of the stuff I grow is pretty tough and if it gets a "knock" it usually still appears. Regards to all. Syd. .
Syd - Oakville is about an hours drive from me. I do know a few people that live there Looking in Plantstew I see there is a variety of Heather hardy to zone 4. I don't remember seeing this plant in any of the nursery's I visit, but I will be looking this year.
Hi Netty. Chance in a million but my friends (went to school with the lass) are Derek and Margaret Horsey. Syd.
