This was a twig only a couple weeks ago. I had pruned my Forsythia. After a few days, read somewhere that forsythia cuttings are easy to bloom indoors. I just picked up a twig and put it in water and placed in a window sill. So happy to see leaves now. Had to share :)

Wonderful bit of spring greenery there, Tina. Thank you for sharing!
We had forsythia when we lived in upstate NY and I always cut a few branches to bring inside and force. Nice to have a bit of green and yellow when it's all white outside. I saved the major pruning for after it bloomed, since forsythia blooms on old wood.

Nothing like the blooms of Forsythia to get spring fever! My Forsythia is just a little baby, so I don't want to take any cuttings, but my neighbor has a big one....
    What a great idea!

Our forsythia hasn't even thought of putting out new leaves yet. Mind you I don't blame it as we still have below freezing temperatures here. It's so nice to see the leaves appearing on yours Tina. Will you plant it in the garden if it grows roots?

    Hi Tina,
It has almost been a week since you plopped that twig in water. Do you have leaves visible yet? ...annnnd, more importantly, do you have any flowers?

Sjoerd : Lots of new leaves now but no flowers or roots yet. And the leaves seem to be a little droppy. Any idea what might be happening?

The only thing that immediately comes to mind is that it may be a bit too warm indoors for that twig. Another possibility is that it was left too long before you placed it in water.

I do hopew that it will bloom for you.

p.s. Do you have access to willows?

    Hi Tina,

The twig may not be able to support the leaves as they get larger with the necessary amount of water. Try putting a clear plastic bag over the twig to raise the humidity and infuse moisture back into the leaves.

Whenever I force forsythia twigs in the Springtime, I cut the twigs about two feet long or even a little longer if I have the right container to hold about a third of the length. Then I take a hammer and smash the cut ends about maybe 2 inches up and put them in warm water. Shortly after, I will get the cheerful yellow flowers... and then leaves after that.

Interesting that you have gotten leaves first.... Hmmm.
