Just wanted to post about our local town and their composting scheme.

each year they collect all the leaves and send it to a professional composter who sends it back a year later fully composted.

the best thing is we can then go to the local recycling area where they store it and bag it and take it home for free.

i just came home with 10 bags of high grade leaf compost.Superb stuff for my sandy soil. Whilst there i also picked up a couple bags of tree chippings as a top mulch. again for free.

I only found out about the scheme by accident as we were dropping off a few items for recycling.

reason for the post is to suggest you check with your local recycling areas/dumps to see if they offer similar schemes.

We have special brown bins for putting composting materials in. The council collect them every two weeks and the following year we, too, can go and collect bags of free compost. I do, however, have three bins for making my own 'black gold' but it's always good to have the council stuff too as a top up mulch for the garden.

Our town has a free compost day as well, usually in April. They dump mountains of compost in the parking lot at the fair grounds and people are to bring their own containers and shovels. They do advertise a limit of 3 containers, but there is always plenty to go around. At the end of the day people are allowed to fill up their pickup trucks :)

    I think that's wonderful.

In my county they collect all the wood from the road crew keeping roads and wires cleared. Then in Spring they chip and double chip it and keep it in a block bin area. If you can prove you live in the county, you are welcome to drive a truck up and they will scoop as much as you would like for mulching your flower gardens. You can't be a landscaper as a business. This is for us taxpayers homes.

I love it. I have so many gardens in the yard my hubby said, we could use about 30 pick up trucks worth. Until this year we had a pro haul in 30 yards if it. That will be a good savings.
