A friend of mine found an ancient stone mortar bowl, with three legs. I don't have the exact measurements yet, but it is approximately 6 or 7 inches in diameter. He has not found the pestle (yet). We were wondering how to find out its worth? It might be a museum piece? My friend is going to send a picture with a measuring tape to show the size tomorrow. He found it in an area well known for Indian artifacts.
the size has very little to do with anything. Who owns the land he found it on? If it is private land he will have to work out the ownership with the landowner. If it was national or state park he will probably have to turn it over to them and if it really is a Native American object it just might be claimed by a local Native American Tribe. Those finds can get pretty sticky when it concerns a Native American connection. And as far as establishing owner ship and value, contacting a local University will probably give you best information.
Ancient finds are always exciting however establishing true ownership can sometimes be a bit complex.
