Just lately (I don't have a clue why) my computer is
showing this message in a security alert box:

"Logon process has failed to create the security options dialogue."

Does anyone know how I can fix this problem as I can't seem to get to the bottom of it? It's causing no end of problems. I've even tried re-booting but it's still appearing. :-?

    Many thanks.

When does it appear Eils? And are you completely unable to use the system when it does?

It appears just after I type my password in and before it opens up the desktop. I can't do a thing with the computer for ages even after hitting the ctrl + alt+ delete buttons to open the task manager. It does, eventually, kick in but but can take an hour or more!!

I'm going to look for a solution for you Eils but in the meantime might I suggest you use Vista's Hibernate function so you don't actually ever have to fully restart your computer. I wrote about it earlier here: Windows XP Hibernate - will save you time and money! (it was written for XP but it should work just as well for Vista).

I've already tried that Frank. I get about ten minutes and then everything goes pear shaped again. I'm in 'safe mode' at the moment as it's the only way I can stay in touch.
I have a feeling it's some sort of virus as my CPU levels are way too high when I have nothing running. :(

Have you opened Task Manager? If you open it and go to the Processes tab and then click the CPU column to order by lowest/highest you should be able to see the name of the process using high CPU. Hope we can fix it Eils!

I can't seem to do this in safe mode but as soon as I can get access again I'l give it a try. I'm going to be bald at the end of all this as I'm ready to tear my hair out!! I'll let you know how I get on - if I ever do.

Mart I hope you're not in too much pain from your wrist injury. Take care and look after yourself.

OK I managed to get into the task manager processes and nothing there seems amiss. I've also tried running Windows Fix-it - no improvement either. I'm really stumped on this one. :'(

Have you recently upgraded/changed your antivirus Eileen? I ask this because a friend and I were recently stumped as to why his computer was so slow and it was because he had 2 different anti-virus programs running at the same time. They were 'fighting' each other and CPU levels were high when nothing else was running. Once he deleted the 2nd program all was well again. Just a thought ...

Have you tried googling the phrase "Logon process has failed to create the security options dialogue"? I did briefly and there is a lot written about it.
