He's a regular visitor to neighbouring gardens. We live on the inside of a "U shaped" crescent so there's a big area for wildlife. there are a few gardens with ponds and goldfish. He never bothered with my koi they were far too big and the perimeter rocks far too high for him to stretch down to stab them. This pergola is at the bottom of the garden of a house three doors away. I took the photo through a back bedroom window on zoom,
No, as I said earlier, he couldn't get near them. So he didn't try. They are ungainly birds, principally waders as they don't like getting their bums wet. They also need a sure footing. The perimeter rocks around our pool wouldn't have given him a stable perch. Because of their height there was about twelve to eighteen inches between the top of the rocks and the surface of the water. The only vulnerable point was the lip of the waterfall, but I had a piece of net on a frame protruding from it, so he still couldn't reach the water. Far easier for him to wade into a goldfish pond and help himself.
He wasn't even a character, it was just Philip Marlowe (Humphrey Bogart) having a bit of fun with Carmen Sternwood (Martha Vickers), in the classic film noir "The Big Sleep."
Did you like the shorts? It's my favourite film noir. It is said within the film industry so I've read, that Martha Vickers' best scenes ended up on the cutting room floor. The studio wanted to promote the career of Lauren Bacall, as she and Bogart had married after they'd finished filming, but before its release. In fact they added a further scene six months after completing the original shooting featuring Bogart and Bacall after they were married, to "big up her part." It's the long scene between them in a restaurant with the "racehorse analogy." This one. Martha Vickers starred in more films, but none as memorable then moved into television drama. She died of cancer aged 46 in 1971.
