hero in a half shell! Thanks to the trend in the 80's of children owning Terrapins, then getting bored of them and dumping them in ponds, we have a pair living in a lake where we walk the dog every morning. As soon as the sun comes out, out they come to bask. They don't seem to cause a problem with the nature of the pond, they bask surrounded by a variety of ducks and geese and the lake is full of massive carp.
I remember that. Quite sad but it's uplifting to see that this pair have had a successful life so far As far as I recall some kids ventured into sewers also with tragic consequences.
As long as they can survive our British weather they should be OK. It's a shame though that they were ever sold as pets in the first place.
EJ,..great to see they survived the harsh weather,..they seem to have adjusted well. Sadly back in the 1980's every Pet Shop sold Red Eared Terrapins,..including a small Tank to keep them in,..needless to say despite telling customers how to care for them,..it didn't take very long before customers would arrive back at the shop saying the shell had gone soft,..or worse,..i stopped selling them,..there were of course owners who looked after them very well.
