We noticed this Ruby-throated hummingbird on a brick. It was about 10 a.m., and that house wall faces northwest, so hadn't been in the sun. We've never seen a hummingbird perch on a wall, just on the hook holding its nectar feeder, or in a nearby tree. Can anyone explain what this little bird was doing, and why?

Maybe there are certain minerals it gets from the brick. Some birds take grit from walls to help grind down the food in their crops but it does seem rather strange behaviour for a hummingbird.

I read somewhere that they also eat some tiny insects. Maybe that is what he was watching the bricks for ! Bugs in the holes. They perch on anything available here but I have seen them in the same position. We had one last year that only perched like that to eat.

I agree with the above about the insects, they also look for spiders silk for nests.

A Hummer darted about just beneath the eaves this Summer.
We surmised that she was collecting Spider eggs or baby Spiders for her babies.
