I just can't seem to help myself when it comes to orchids. I have killed 2 of them so far and I was just going to give up on them. I had bought the salmon colored one a few weeks ago and then I got a coupon from the Home Depot gardening club to buy one and get one free...how can you pass up a deal like that? I do have to repot the taller one because I am worried it seems a little top heavy but I just haven't found the right pot for it. I wish they made clear glass pots so I could see the roots and the roots could get some light. I haven't looked up the smaller two yet to see what kind they are...they were just so unusual. What is on the tag says Paph.Hampshire prolific. I do hope you can keep all three happy and healthy Sherry as they are gorgeous. I have a habit of murdering orchids so never ask me for advice!!
The two smaller ones are Paphiopedilums or more commonly known as Lady Slipper Orchids...they are one of my favorites and I paint them (in watercolors) all the time.
Thank you drissel122...I had looked a while ago and there is a long list of names and I gave up before I found it. I thought of Lady Slipper but then couldn't find that name .... My first one I had for almost a year so if I remember to not set it on top of the refrigerator or not to forget to move them if we have a fire in the fireplace I will be fine. The second one I way over watered so I have to be more careful. Thank you again...
I am really good at keeping my Paphiopedilums alive, but to get them bloom again...I'm bamboozled! Can't seem to do it, but I'm not giving up on them.
They're lovely, Sherry. Congratulations! I tend to ignore mine most of the time, and they grow, bloom and seem to sort of nearly prosper but not quite. Still, as long as they bloom for us I'm happy. I also need to repot, and I think mother found a shop that carried clear glass pots.
What unusual lady slippers. Love them! Mine have been one of the easiest plants I have had. Hope yours do well for you. (my hybrid yellow ladyslipper plant bloomed itself out and died after blooming for two years solid-so not all have been successful)
Cool orchids. i love lady slippers but from distance. my apartment is def. not suitable for orchids, although i never actually had one. they need humidity and well, i like plants that don't require much from their owner. LOL
Wow! Those are lovely things to see. I hope that they perform well for you and that you are able to hold them over. Striking colours and quite exotic-looking. You got a good deal there at Home Depot.
Thank you everyone...I just like things that are different once in a while. I was looking for information about them and found a nice site. They send you tips on how to care for them and if you want, you can buy a book. I decided to just take the tips until I know these will make it. I was surprised to hear you should not have it by ripening fruit when it is starting to flower, the ethylene gas from it and from aerosol cans can cause problems. At least 10 feet away. I guess I will be learning some new tips every week and it should be interesting to learn.
drissel122...I get e-mail information from Ron the orchid man and he said if you give your orchid too much nitrogen will cause the orchid not to flower again..He said go easy on it or you will have one that has excessive growth but a complete absence of flowers...I am not sure if that could be your problem. He seems to have some great information but I didn't realize there was so much to learn about them.
