I found a hard bound book tonight at the local Goodwill store called "Field Book of Common Ferns" As it is in EXCELLENT condition, I figured it wasn't very old like maybe the '50's...the copyright in the front said 1928. What a find in such good condition. Must have been that who ever owned it didn't find the need to look through it very often. Glad I snagged it. I see different ferns out in the woods, but have no idea what they are. just about anything you want/need to know about ferns and their reproduction. I would take a picture of it IF I could find my camera I wonder where I left it. Sorry I can't share the visual interest Yay!!! I found my camera. moderator's note: added a more descriptive title to topic ( photo / image / picture from carolyn keiper's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from carolyn keiper's Garden ) fern book 1928 ( photo / image / picture from carolyn keiper's Garden )
I LOVE old books and envy you your find! Getting a book that is in excellent condition for a bargain, and a book that is informative and useful, is a double whammy. Congratulations!
Thanks!. I like to have useable books at my disposal. With the internet it isn't as hard to find information, but I still like to look at a book. Strange, huh? So it is always a bonus to find a great one in such good condition.
My wife and I vacationed in Vermont one year and while at a state park we picked up a booklet about ferns in the local parks. What I remember most and is easy to do is categorize the ferns into one of three groups according to the leaf. 'Cut once, twice or three times is easy to look for and aids in identification. In our yard we have all three shapes. Jerry
Interesting Jerry, I know next to "not much" about ferns, I need to educate myself and little tips such as yours makes it easier to grasp some of the differences.
