I know my plot looks like a jungle, but it is a good jungle. I am trialing a no dig method of gardening on the plot, putting down thick layers of compost on the surface and planting directly into that and as you can see, my sweet corn is going great guns! I only watered these in back at planting time and have left them to their own devices since. The theory behind no dig is you build up a natural, healthy bacterial balance, maintain a healthy soil structure and by not turning the soil, you aren’t bringing the damp layers of soil to the surface to dry out and turning in the dry soil, thus making a dust bowl. It certainly beats digging!
Your sweetcorn is looking good. I am glad to see that you are trying the no-till method. I have been using that for more than 15 years and min till in other plots. I have been satisfied all this time and hope that you will have good results as well.
EJ, your corn looks healthy and the no till method seems to be right for you. I only turned over the soil when I took up the garlic due to having also planted a few potatoes between the rows of garlic. Also to dig out the dreaded Bindweed. Even digging doesn't rid the garden of it, but I keep fighting. This is my first ever try at growing corn. Only about 10 stalks, but it looks good.
EJ, Sjoerd, Growingpains, I am starting the no till method .....soon. When I succession plant, I am adding compost on top, then just planting the seeds. We shall see if I can resist the siren call of the shovel! Old habits die hard, but no till does make a lot of sense.
Cayuga, I know about the old methods being hard to quit. I still dig a little and also do some No till. Both seem to work. This is our year for green beans. WOW!
