Just a few pics I took around the garden today.

Most things are looking very tired after a long and painfully dry summer,
but some things are just hanging in there,
and several are actually looking rejuvenated by the cooler temperatures.
    My Nasturtiums [IMG]
and Oxalis are clearly enjoying the weather,
    [IMG]
    but, the "Blue Ginger" [IMG]

and "Rosebud Salvia" are about to give up the ghost.

And the Pentas are looking rather worn out. [IMG]

But my dear old "Bird of Paradise" is still going strong,
and will generously supply me with flowers for cutting, all winter long -
 so long as we remember to bring it inside when temperatures fall below freezing.

If you'd like to see what else is blooming in my garden now,
just click on my blog entry "Extended Season" below,
the Camellias are gorgeous this fall. :-D

    Re: bird of paradise

Oh gosh no Barb, mine blooms really nicely - every year!
I wonder if they are talking about some other plant,
or :-? maybe they meant that it takes 7 years to bloom from seed?

I did grow mine from seed, :-D
but to be honest, I don't remember how long before I had my first flowers,
    :?: I don't think it was as long as 7 years though . . .

Oh I love your blue ginger and your bird of paradise Zuzu. What a lot of colour you have in your garden. Sadly I can't say that much is blooming here in Scotland at the moment. :(

    Re: good for yours

    Thank you, Eileen.
I do cling desperately to every last bit of summer color.
Our winter is mild and short by most standards,
but still, I can barely make it through 'til spring.

Well, actually, I do like bats, I like most all critters -
but there is a very special place in my heart [IMG] for critters that eat mosquitoes!

 But that's not why I have the avatar (if that's why you ask).

I changed my avatar to the bat for Halloween, Barb,
and I planned to change it again afterward,
but I've been told that it suits me, [IMG] being rather "batty" myself, I suppose,

. . . and besides, every time I even think of changing it,
he (the bat) looks at me with that cute little expression . . .

    . . . see there??? He's doing it again!

And I just can't send him away.

Frank understands, ;) don't you Frank?

    Re: good for yours

Zuzu, your blooms are gorgeous. I have to look for that blue Ginger and see if it will grow down here.
I have Oxalis with purple leaves and white blooms that almost died during the summer but has come back with flying colors this fall.

I like bats too and for the same reason Zuzu does, they eat many times their weight in mosquitos and other night flying insects. I have asked for a Bat House for Christmas.

All your blooms look great to me too Zuzu.
I'm intrigued by the Rosebud Salvia...do the Hummingbirds love it?

    Re: good for yours

    Thanks everyone :-D
I'm glad you enjoyed the photos -
The garden is looking like a tremendous mess,
with all of the yellowing Lily and Ginger foliage -
but I can't cut any of it down 'til it finishes feeding the bulbs and tubers, :-?
so it's nice to find a few pretty flowers here and there.
Netty ~ Salvia involucrata (another common name is "Rose Leaf Salvia")
is the latest to flower of any of the perennial Salvias that I grow.
By and large, my summer hummers have moved south before it really breaks out,
but I have been buzzed once or twice while working near them this fall,
I think those must have been migrating birds from further north,
stopping for a quick sip. :)

Toni ~ I wish you better luck than we've had with our bat house.
We mounted it according to instructions for height and location,
but  the bats never moved in,
instead, we have a colony of anole lizards inhabiting it. :D :D :D
Oh well, ;) they eat bugs, too.
