Male black with red shoulders, female brown and striped all over.

    The female is...
Brown and heavily streaked across chest and back. Prominent white eyestripe. Buffy throat and face. Pale stripe in middle of crown. Weak pale wingbars. Bend of wing with brown or orange-red. Undertail coverts dark with light edges

When singing to defend the territory or to attract a female the male fluffs the red epaulettes and half-spreads his wings to show off the red to the full extent.

Here is the male Red winged black bird....He is in his mating ritual.

If I were a redwing female I'd probably fall for him. Well photographed!

Those are great pictures. I can never seem to get my birds to sit still long enough to take a picture. I enjoyed seeing yours. Wannabe

Once again you have captured and presented an interesting series of bird fotos. You are really good at that, Sherry. I hope that you will just keep on doing these.

Great pics. I can't never get pics of the red winged black birds here. They scram the second any noise is about. They come to my back yard in flocks. Thanks for sharing.

I so enjoy looking at your photographs Sherry as they always seem to tell a story. I'm never likely to see a live red wing blackbird displaying but now I can say that I know exactly what their mating dance is like!!! :stew1:

Sherry, they just came back to our area for the summer. I think they wish they would've waited awhile to migrate north with all the snow/sleet in our forecast! It sounds like you're in for a snowy weekend up by you. I'm hoping it's only rain here.
