Here in Wisconsin they bloom as a fall flower...sometimes I cut them off twice if they get too large (before they open) and most of the time in June....I am not sure where you live and how things grow or bloom. I see you live in Texas...I would check with someone that has them for your area.
Is this normal for your area? Do you normally get them in the Spring and Fall? They bloom due to the amount of light they get (long nights), I am assuming that the "winter/spring" weather was warm enough to support the growth of the plant for a spring bloom. If that is the case you can let them bloom now and then cut them back for the fall bloom as soon as they are done with the spring bloom.
Mine stay green all winter then bloom like crazy in the spring, cut them back after that and they will bush out more for the Fall blooming. Many people will tell you to not let them bloom in spring, cut that growth off so you will have a larger, showier plant in the fall...remember seeing all those huge plants for sale in October. But I let them bloom when they want.
Mums? Really? Wow, the northern tier of the country doesn't think about mums till fall. During the summer, till July 4th, I pinch the plants to encourage the plants to fill out. Jerry
The blooms are much smaller than it's fall blooms. I'll go ahead and let it do it's thing... then "off with their heads"!
I don't think our growing season is long enough to have mums bloom twice. You have to be careful when buying them so you make sure they say on the tag that they are hardy or they will not come back every year. One time at our first home my husband was helping (???) I had beautiful reddish brown large mums and they came back every year thicker and thicker. When I went out to see how he cut them back, they were gone . I have never found any mums as big or as beautiful as these were. I wish I would have checked the area sooner because all of them (pulled plants) were in the garbage and gone.
No I have never found any flowers as large as those were or the color.. those were given to me and had been in their garden for many years
