I got the seeds for this last year from my sis-in-law. I think she said it was a Prince of Barcelona... or something like that. It's still pretty young... but thought maybe someone could recognize it?

I've never heard of a plant by that name. Is it supposed to be a perennial?

If that came up in a pot in my garden, I would not think it was what I had planted; I would think it was a baby locust tree, as they volunteer frequently, spread by birds eating their seed.

But if it is a perennial, could it be a baptisia (false indigo)?

Should mention that locust gets called by its genus name in some parts of the US, but I don't know about Texas. The genus is Robinia. Perhaps "Prince of Barcelona" was the cultivar name of the plant.

yes... it's a perennial. That's all I know about it. Except for when she gave me the seed pods, they made a "popping" noise when they opened. Guess it's just too early to try to ID it. But thought I'd give it a try. Thanks!

The leaves to resemble a Honey Locust Gleditsia triacanthos and they resemble the Black Locust Robinia pseudoacacia They are cousins but their 'family tree' divides when you get to Subfamily down thru Species.

What did the seed pod look like?
The name Prince of Barcelona is probably a local common name. Most plants have several common names depending on what state and/or country you live in.

Guess I'm not much help!
I'll just wait until it flowers or get more information on it before I bother everyone again.
    Thanks for the help!

It's no bother Cheryl, we like the challenge of IDing mystery plants. It's one of the best ways to learn about flowers/trees etc.

I have had seedlings like yours come up in my yard from time to time and have never known what they were, so getting yours IDed will help me solve the mystery in my yard too. :stew1:

I found out what this was today while at the Garden Center at Lowe's. It's a bird of Paradise also known as "Pride of Barbados". Hey... I was close with Prince of Barcelona! :D
Now... if it will just grow up and produce some lovely flowers for me.

I'm so glad you found out what your plant is. Now all we have to do is wait until it flowers for you. I think the flowers of the Pride of Barbados come in both yellow and red. :stew2:

Great on the seeds from me as well. Only I don't have anything to trade. Will have to be postage if that's OK with you. :-|

Not a problem with trade or anything. We'll work out the details.
I sure hope this plant makes it and produces beautiful flowers and a bounty of seeds.
