Hi, I grew up in a gardening family in Maryland but have been a renter for a while. Recently, my number came up and I went to survey the community garden plot that was mine to claim. It's hard to see what's below the weeds. There are a lot of reasons not to do it and I can't really see my way through the obstacles. That's how most things are in life when you are really living though, right? You bet I took it. Now What?

Hi Red, welcome to GardenStew from north central Texas.

Determine if everything you see are weeds or possibly something coming up from the previous plot owner. Or just pull everything up and start new.
Decide what you want to plant....veggies, flowers, herbs, all of the above and be sure they will grow in your climate/ USDA zone.

And hang around here every day and ask questions. We have several gardeners who have plots (allotments you will hear some of them called) and the rest of us will try to help too.

Got a camera? We really would love to see photos of your future garden area.

I see some brassicas that have gone to seed but other than that it is totally weeds and required a fresh start. I am not as concerned with what to plant. I can handle that. It is getting the plot conditioned and planted in two weeks time. I have always had compost and clippings and free leaf mulch. None of that is available to me at this late date. I will have to buy fertilizer/conditioner/mulch. I am not used to doing it that way and not sure what I need to set myself up for success before I plant. And Pictures will come as I learn to get my phone talking to my computer. ;)

Hi there Red and a big welcome to GardenStew from Scotland. I had a third of an acre of weeds to tackle when I moved into our cottage. It takes time and a lot of hard work to get the ground how you want it but it's so worth while when its done. Good luck with weeding your garden plot.

Thanks, Eileen! I guess it gets easier after you knock it back for a few years.

Thanks. I am working on the photo thing. I am a little technologically challenged but willing to change!
