Despite my best efforts I have been unable to identify this little beauty. It was growing in what I recall was full sun and up a wall, although I don't think it was a climber itself just growing with the clematis and honeysuckle.I'm sorry that the leaves aren't clearer. Well the leaves do not look like it, but the flower resembles one of the Tropaeolum sorts. The blooms are smaller than one would expect also. Actually karihn, this is not an answer to your question, but perhaps it is a direction in which to think.
It reminds me of Tropaeolum ciliatum, but from memory I am sure ours is a bit more yellow than that. Still if it is and it likes your garden it can be a real thug.
Thank you thank you, thank you I think you've all nailed it I've checked it in my huge RHS book and the flowers do indeed match but the leaves must have been hidden amongst the other climbers. It isn't in my garden but at a National Trust property in Cornwall that we stayed at a couple of years ago,so I'm not bothered if its a thug
Annoying thing is that the tubers of Tropaeolum tuberosum are edible (Yakon) but I cannot find out if the tubers of T. ciliatum are equally as edible.
