Given the breadth and depth of experience on Garden Stew, I thought I'd post this and see what you all have to say.

I have a tubular steel garden stool with a padded seat. It's been a real help for many garden tasks. However, it's started to become a bit wonky, I'm concerned it will tip over while I'm sitting on it.

I looked around and didn't see anything I liked. Online as an illustration for a defunct blog, with no instructions, I saw this shop stool. It's similar to what I'm thinking.

I'm not sure about those casters in the yard and garden. I found these bigger ones on Amazon.

Any thoughts? It would be nice to just follow a plan so I don't strain my brain thinking too much about it :dislike:. I may have sturdy wood in a shed somewhere. Or, I could go to the used house parts store and possibly find sold cabinet doors of the right size for a couple dollars, and not have to cut for the top or bottom. That would mean driving to / in Portland ( like Frodo and Sam in Mordor :setc_033:)

I don't have a complete workshop, but I have tools for cutting and drilling and sanding etc.

I want sturdy, durable, not too heavy, a width and height suitable for me (wider than my current stool). A little storage shelf under it would be great too.

Use Omnidirectional caster wheels, (Omni Wheels for short). They may be a bit difficult to obtain, however if you know anyone with a 3D printer - Than you can easily download how to print them...

Trust me, these things are really the best. There is no wobble, and no caster wheel moving incorrectly in opposition to the rest. Thus no wheeled stool or trolley with a mind of it's own - They'll make you feel like you're on a hovercraft, or those anti-gravity hover boards in those Back To The Future movies. The stool will move effortlessly in any direction.

Whereas with conventional caster wheels, you have to initially make a somewhat heavy push to make all the wheels align in the direction of your choice. Which stops happening correctly after some years of use. Resulting in a lot of frustration on our part later, as the stool or trolley gets old, (actually only the casters get old and become difficult to twist on their own) - No such problem with Omni wheels! And since there won't be any strain on them when it comes to choosing a direction, thry also won't wear our so easily either.

Unfortunately these are a bit pricy. However, it's a one time cost. After which you'll never have to bother about such a thing again - As what you'll make will last forever.

But like I already said, there are other options, like 3D printing it out. However this can be made in a conventional metal machine workshop too, (if you have access to one).
