Whenever I recondition one of my veggie bed for a new crop, the sparrows just loved to play in the dirt. They just love to take a dirt bath and create little depressions on the losen tilled earth. They are nice to watch just like little children defying their parents instruction not to play in the dirt. :D But when the bed is ready with the compost added before mulching, they would drive me up the wall when they had their dirt bath because the whole raised bed would have to be rebuild.

One solution I found is to wet the bed but it normally dry up quickly and the sparrows would be there to have a great time immediately. Then this morning while having breakfast, I looked at this thing which is just sitting on the dining room window sill moving its green ears doing nothing. Hmmm ..... looks like a good candidate for a solar operated scarecrow.

It worked except for a few braver sparrows that had their dirt bath at the back of the smiling face right at the end of the bed. Anyway the damage is minimal. :-D

What a great idea and an amusing little feature in your garden too. :-D I hope those sparrows stay away and let you play in the dirt instead of them!!

I have seen those on sale here KK. Have to admit, never looked at them as a scarecrow, but I can see how that would work. Brilliant!

I like this sort of thing. Congrats on having a degree of success.
    Sparrowes are hard to combat.
