Have any of you seen the price of canning lids? Good heavens, any cost savings you have from canning your own produce just went out the door. Three, I repeat, three dollars for a dozen wide-mouth lids!
I'll keep on canning, mainly because I know what went into the jar and how it was raised, but at this rate I may have to freeze more and can less. The price of freezer containers won't go up, will it?

I have no idea, but I'm not surprised that the price of canning lids go up. Either there are too few who want them or the demand has risen markably so the manufacturer wants more profit.

Yes, Jane, I have seen the increase in all the canning items.... I think more people are trying to do for them selves and the manufacturers are seeing $$$$$$ at every item. I told all my market customers I will no longer make jam for my table because I can't afford to buy the jars and sell the product for a reasonable price. :( I do see there is a bulk quantity available at one of the seed stores I use and they are still expensive to me. You have to buy the whole 24 dzn and they are still close to $2.00 a dzn for wide mouth.

I cut my stuff up so it will go into a reg quart jar, just can't pay that for lids 'cause they're wide-mouth.

I normally buy my pint canning lids at our dollar store at $1.00 for a dozen. This year they havent had any so I bought from our grocery store at $2.29 for 12 lids. Rediculous price ! MG have you checked online prices. Bet someone on ebay sells them.

time to invest in the reusable lids...Tattler. they had a special on earlier this month.

not sure what people can do at market. maybe ask for the lids and jars to be returned for a discount?

Well, my darling husband came home with four boxes (48 lids) that he found for $2.27 a box. I would rather have those than a diamond ring!
Rockhound, I use some wide-mouth because I have the jars. With the price of jars I'm not going to invest in more jars!
Carolyn, I have looked into ordering on-line. Three of my friends and myself are going to order wholesale this fall, and divvy the lids up among us. It will be a considerable savings, even if we have to pay shipping. Great idea, and I do wish you could find some way to sell you delicious jams. Your customers must be very disappointed!

Rockhound, I have the widemouth jars already, so I need to use the jars anyway, but I find it much easier to wash the jars, too. So I have to use what I have and be thankful for having them to use. Widemouth and narrow both.

I have the tattler lids and find that you have to only screw the band on fingertip tight, no more than that and then tighten it again when you take it out of the canner. I just can't figure out how to do that part with the greenbeans....They(The tattler company) and I seem to have a serious lack of communication on this issue... I asked how do I do the tightening after the pressure canner comes off the stove, but still needs to cool to the point of the temperature dropping on it own to remove the lid and they still keep saying you have to tighten them after the jars come out of the canner. That won't work. Other than that they are pretty much the same as regular lids. You don't have the same "ping" when they can or you tap on the lid, but that is just another learning curve for this type of lid.

I may try the lids from the catalog that are supposed to be Ball brand without any markings on them, but I hesitate, I used them once before and the lids bulged instead of vacuuming down  :headscratch: :smt022 that is very wasteful of the product and my time.

Jane, Hope you and your friends find some bargain out there.

carolyn, i tried those non marked lids, got them from Lehman's i think,in bulk on a sale. didn't have any trouble with them, and they have no BPA on them.

will be trying the Tattler's this fall and will let you know how they work for me. glad you're posting all your findings here!
