Thank you both. Do you know of any benefits? I see it has a taproot. I guess that will make it a bit difficult to pull.
Hi Beeker, Thanks for asking this question. I have known that plant for years....I remember it from my childhood. I rather like it, and have been known to use it in bouquets! But, yes, I wouldn't tolerate it in my perennial beds.
Thank you. It is a charming weed. It is just growing near my driveway, where the topsoil to fill my raised bed was dumped. There is a small pile left and now various weeds are growing there. I am also using the pile as a temporary home for plants I receive from friends and co-workers. I got some bee-balm I put there until I can get the new area set up.
If you can't pull it, I'd at least cut it off at the soil line. That will prevent hundreds of seeds dropping to the ground, for hundreds more plants next year. (A general rule for any 'weeds' that can't be pulled right away. Cutting/mowing them down at least prevents a new crop of seeds.)
Hey Beeker, this plant is in the GardenStew database but needs more info and your photo Would you mind uploading it on Polygonum persicaria
Got any more photos to add? Ask Cheryl, I can be pretty persistent when it comes to getting photos on the plant pages.
I just added another one: Mollugo verticillata aka green carpetweed. I found the name when I searched the internet. The picture makes it look like a tall weed, but it really just lies flat on the ground and creeps. ( photo / image / picture from Beeker's Garden )
