It all started last year, august... It was time to renew the strawberry bed. We do this every two years. This time we chose the old standby--"Corona", and a new one, "Dar Royale". The Dar Royale is an early cropper and we have begun harvesting small amounts already. We get a few more strawbs each time we harvest. The Corona patch: The Dar Royale patch: The Corona's are a bit behind and somewhat punier than the Dar Royale's. I do not know if that has to do with the fact that we followed spuds in this plot or not. Normally we would not want to do this, but must needs be, as we have no other room or place. The Dar Royale is resistant to the problems that can occur in the ground where potatos stood. The straws were delicious to see and eat. Here today, gone tomorrow... ....or should I say, "gone in minutes". Some would never see the inside of our kitchen. Well, with the greatest difficulty, we were able to show a modicum of restraint-- and here is what finally did make it to the kitchen table: These were eaten for brekkie and the rest will be reserved for this evening with a dollop of youghurt. Soon we will have enough for short cake and whipped cream.
My strawberries aren't nearly ready to eat yet. They are forming berries but won't be edible for a couple weeks.
You didn't save any??? I can certainly know why? They would not have made it out of the garden if it had been me.
I love strawberries. I have a tub of a new variety with pink flowers, but forget their name. I also have a bed of other kinds. I need to get out there and eat some/check on them....
Sjoerd, you are making it very hard for me to resist planting strawberries! I don't need something else to take care of, but those berries of yours look so good that I may just give in and have a go at strawberries. I hope you enjoy every luscious berry, whether in the garden or in the kitchen.
They look so good and on a banana leaf plate makes it look as though they were in my kitchen ... yum!!! :-D
Thank you all so much for your nice reply's. They were indeed quite tasty. MG--I do not know if your climate will permit strawbs, but if it will, then they are a great crop to have. I would only advise you to get your ground right before you begin if you DO intend on giving them a try. We can talk if you decide to give it a go. Say TONI--Why do you reckon that you have such poor luck at trying to grow strawbs? Is it primarily your geographical location? KK--Yes, I thought that banana leaf plate showed them off very well.
