Two summers ago I bought a couple of sale jackmani clematis. They have done well and have helped provide shade to the shed doing a fairly good job of covering three sides in foliage and blooms. The jackmani is almost finished blooming due to our pretty extreme heat this summer. Then surprise a section began blooming with a different bloom. I had not seen this bloom on either of the plants prior to this year but am not complaining. I had never seen a clematis like this one but I am pretty limited in knowledge of plants since I only buy if they are on sale or free. Knowlegdable Stewbies, any ideas to the variety?
That looks a lot like one named Clematis 'Multi-blue' Clematis 'Multi Blue' (Clematis) is your bloom purple as it shows in the photo?
The purple color is pretty true in the photo Toni. At first I thought it was a mutant jackmani until there were more of the same blooms. I think you are right on the ID. Thanks!
It is on the west side of the shed so it gets reflected sunlight from the house and then afternoon sun until the table umbrella shades it. Is yours in full sun?
It looks like my Chrystal Fountain, except my CF is slightly lighter in color. Has the same center rays? in the middle. Your clems are lovely Jewell.
Ok, now I am completely baffled (not that unusual). When I followed the stem/vine back to the ground it ended up where I had planted what I thought was a volunteer Nelly Moser. (Have had many self root/seed over the years making new plants). Could just be a seedling that wasn't what I thought it was, but I could have sworn it bloomed Nelly last year. This last few years I have been getting some interesting variations on plants that have reverted back to parent plants or mutated. The garden is full of surprises. This clematis isn't like my others so will enjoy it throughly whatever variety it is.
Beautiful Clem, Jewell. I do not know that one, but if it a Jack. then it will have evergreen leaves. What a nice surprise, eh?
