I usually grow California Giant and Big Bertha although they usually are just regular size bell peppers for me ! Good producers though if the weather is agreeable !
I always buy the plants since they are so cheap,,$1.99 a six pack ! The reds and yellow bells do not do as well here ! Me,,I don`t care what color they are,, they all taste the same !
Mart, your assessment of the red and yellow peppers is so comforting to me. I have tried several varieties of the reds, and they always just didn't do well--a few peppers if I was lucky. I stick with the green bells, which in the late summer/early fall produce like crazy. I, too, purchase starts. No reason to take up my limited seedling space under lights and with a heating pad for six plants!
Only things I use seed for go straight in the garden ! Starts are just too cheap here not to get them ! Gives me an early start ! I have no idea why the reds and yellows just do not do well ! I thought it was just here,, mmaybe they didn`t like the soil but since the greens do great I trashed that thought ! I get plenty of the greens but the others,, just a few and they are small and thin walled ! It just isn`t worth it and like I said,, they taste the same !
Grandfather grows the green bell pepper plants from starts. Grandmother has used both green bell peppers and red bell peppers to make stuffed peppers.
Last year I grew all sorts of peppers - basket of fire, Diablo and Ringo Oxhorn, Cayenne, Sweet Pepper and Banana Pepper. Some in the greenhouse, some outdoors. Also in a pot
