Last year 2012 I winter sowed double poppies. I lost most of my young plants when Mother Nature sent the thermometer up to 85 degrees in March and then back down to freezing a few days later. I emptied the unsprouted jugs the end of August into my Blue Spruce garden. I have clay soil and can use all the help it can get. This spring I noticed poppy plants. I will collect the seeds when they are ready. Don
Those are really pretty. A very nice surprise in the garden. Are those Papaver somniferum 'Paeoniflorum' aka Peony Poppies? I haven't found any with either the cultivar or common name of Teddy Bear
They are lovely. I really enjoy the annual poppies with their big blowsy blooms. I didn't really understand your post though. What are 'unsprouted jugs'?
My Grand-Mother had given me the peony poppies seeds years ago Planted them in fall just like she told me. Came up next spring. Farmer next door--hired to have weeds sprayed. Killed them. This was over 5 years. Just now have some coming up. Hid--Until "all Clear " They are the bright red ones.
I'm sorry I confused you with the wording in my post. Every year I have winter sowing jugs that for some reason, didn't sprout. Some seeds take two years to sprout. Sometimes the jugs don't get enough water to sprout. Sometimes the seed is too old. I do some seed swaps and the date of collecting the seeds is not on the seed pack. Sometimes I don't get the plants planted and they fry in the jugs but maybe some seeds were planted deeper and hadn't sprouted. When I empty the unsprouted jugs they sprout the following spring.
