For some reason I remembered an ill-fated dinner we served to neighbors when we lived in town. I grilled very good, lightly seasoned steaks and had a choice of vegetables as the main course. Before even tasting the steak our guest asked, "Do you have any A-1 sauce?" I was horrified! So, do you "sauce" your steaks or not? I haven't bought A-1 or Heinz or anything similar in years, but we don't eat a lot of beef (sorry fellow Texans).
You had many instances of 'culture shock' when you moved down here from Yankee-land didn't you? Down here having a choice of those sauces is almost a religious experience. We grew up with them and they were used mainly because steak, pot roast, etc was and still is so expensive that Mom's bought the cheaper cuts with no flavor so the sauce was available to give it some taste. And I think some people are addicted to them and the steak is only an acceptable way of getting their sauce fix. Just like french fries are, for some, only a means to get as much ketchup as you can without resorting to sticking a straw in the bottle. And when it comes to my french fries I am a purist. Not all Texans are beef crazy, Nolan Ryan excluded We don't eat much beef either, Randy only has a steak when we go out some place where we know they know how to cook them but yes he uses A-1 sauce, when I have one I might use a little salt but nothing else.
I much prefer my steaks naked. No sauce for me or seasoning. If the chef/cook has done their job right the steak should be delicious without anything being added to it.
I also prefer my steaks sauceless. I feel like it detracts from the flavor (if youve got a good steak). The last time the bf and I grilled steaks, we only used salt. And my oh my were those the best steaks Ive had in ages!
I only like one piece of meat on the cow. It's next to the filet mignon.I am from NJ and would never never use sauce on my steak. My hubby is from Illinois and was born and raised on a 400 acre farm with cattle. He likes sauce on his but has gotten away from it because of me...LOL
I don't put anything on a 'grilled steak' but if it's broiled in an oven or even a 'George Forman' style grill I'll use A-1 or Heinz on it.
We do no eat a lot of beef,,mostly pork, fish and chicken, but when I get a thick juicy T-Bone I want my A-1 sauce with it !
We eat a great deal of beef, more than we should. But, we have very good beef out here. We don't use any type of sauce because there isn't any need to. We also like our beef on the rare side. I guess if I had a piece that was overcooked I'd have to cover it with something, probably gravy
