Donna, I don't have any of those, but I bought a packet from the (I think) ferry morris rack a year or two ago. I think I got them at Lowes. So what ever they carry check there if you don't have any responses. good luck. I didn't have anywhere to plant them so I never got them started...maybe this year I will try it again, too.
Can I know what kind of black beans were you referring to? If it is the black kind of soya beans which is also know as "edamame" in Japanese, I think you can get it in any asian/Chinese grocers around your area.
KK what she is looking for is a bean in the Phaseolus vulgaris variety...also called Black Turtle Bean. They are used in a variety of recipes from Mexico. http://www.heirloom-organics.com/guide/ ... beans.html
Donna, I don't have any black bean seed, but Pinetree carries Coco Noir--115 seeds for $1.75 (http://www.superseeds.com) Territorial seeds has Black Coco sampler pack #3.65 or packet $5.50. (http://www.TerritorialSeed.com) If you can get a package of black beans at the grocery store, take 10 or so and try sprouting them on a damp paper towel in a zip lock bag. I grew pinto beans that way one year. Then the light dawned and I discovered how cheap pinto beans, dried, shelled, and bagged are!
Jane, Thanks I bought black beans yesterday at grocery store. Will try the damp towel and see what happens. Soup tomorrow with the rest.
Just plant the ones you buy at the store. Dry beans are same seed just not treated with antifungal ect. Thats how we used to get all out bean seed. I still plant some beans from those.
Donna, Don't be too surprised if they don't germinate. They may be heat treated/dried to kill any bug eggs in them and it may kill the germ in the seed. Do try it though and let us know.
Forgot about some of the things they do to beans nowdays. I would try it anyway. Of course if you can find organic black beans, they should not be treated with anything, even heat!
Put 12 black beans on wet paper towel and all 12 have sprouted in 3 days time. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you all.
Donna honey, you are most welcome! Now you can reciprocate by posting your black bean soup recipe on the Recipe Forum! I love your recipes. :-D
I grew many beans out of my pantry last year or maybe the year before and they all grew. Then I put them in peat pots and later planted them in the garden. After a while they all blended together with the ones planted right in the garden so I don't know if they produced anything. It was a fun experiment just knowing they all sprouted. I know the ones that started outside grew much better and stronger.
