I won this plant at a fair and it's looking a little sad but I don't know how much to water it and I can't look it up because I don't know what kind of plant it is! If you could help me identify it and tell me how to take care of it, that would be greatly appreciated! As you can see it is very flat, and the leaves are kind of stuck together at the bottom. I thought it was some kind of grass but I know nothing about plants, so I may not really know anything helpful! Thank you!
where did you get it? it looks like an iris... not a house plant. plant it outside in full sun keep it weeded.
Yep, an Iris and from the width of the leaves I would guess a Tall Bearded one. And put it in the ground now in full sun (which means at least 6+ hours of sun daily), it will over winter just fine and early next Spring or late Winter depending on where you are, it will start putting out more growth and will bloom sometime between March and May....depending on your climate. Next Fall clip the leaves off to about 6 inches tall and let it rest, then the new growth will start again. Iris grow from bulbs, which you will find when you transplant them. After a few years they will multiply and become crowded so then you can dig some of them up to thin them out and start a new bed of them in another part of your garden. Also, see the word Plants at the top of this page under GardenStew....click on that, then enter Iris in the search block. That will take you to the beginning of several pages in our Plant section of different Iris that our members have growing in their gardens.
Thank you all so much! I live in a dorm right now so I have given the iris and those really nice instructions to my dad. I'm a little sad I was excited to try having a houseplant, but I guess I will have to try elsewhere! I got the plant from the Meredith College fall festival, and our school flower is the iris so I suppose this makes sense. The people handing them out didn't know what they were though, haha.
That's a shame that they were doing that. It's hard to care for an unknown plant. I hope it does well @ your dad's house! Cute little starter houseplants are not hard to find at Lowe's, HD, Walmart, etc... although the selection at this time of year might dwindle in some stores in favor of using that space for other items until spring. I hope you find one (or more) soon. Best luck!
