Gardener grows ‘world’s most venomous plant’ gympie-gympie in a locked cage at home https://www.aol.co.uk/lifestyle/gardener-grows-world-most-venomous-100451907.html
This could be very bad news here. It would not be difficult for the plant to drop seeds and be broadcast throughout the country. I think the idiot who has introduced this needs locking up!
What is he doing? There's no way I'd have a plant like that in my home. I'd never even think of having one of our UK dangerous species let alone bringing venomous plants from other parts of the world. The most dangerous plant, that grows wild in some parts of the UK, is Giant Hogweed. This plant has to be handled with extreme care and is dealt with by professionals as it is extremely poisonous to both animals and humans.
If you hear crickets, you may also think of him! https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/10657386.amp/ Is this what they mean when someone refers to "an oxford man"? A tutor/teacher of some sort: https://youtube.com/channel/UCW23qCfvqLLWMZ8JNJpEz8A And a sort of playwriting author: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Daniel-Eml...&dplnkId=19e88eea-5da3-48ad-b82f-49ea2b0d8ebc
This is a definitely worthy of some shivers down the spine and a sore neck from shaking one's head. @eileen - we have Giant Hogweed/Giant Cowparsnip here as well. I spade it out every year from around the house since I learned of its toxicity. There was a public awareness campaign launched within the last couple of years. I'm much more careful with my outerwear now when I remove it. It thrives in my immediate area and is common in the woods along the river.
This bugger has my arms and legs still have a rash since last spring. I have been to the derm so many times applied cortisone steroids and it’s very stubborn… a bunch of meds. https://www.hunker.com/13428793/leyland-cypress-toxicity
Never knew that about the Leyland cypress Pac Good find @Dirtmechanic He should know better I can't find a link but I remember reading that Canadian pondweed was accidentally introduced to the UK by a professor(Oxford ?) who was studying it in his sink and then pulled the plug not realising it drained straight into the river We have a few Giant Hogweed patches along the central reservation of the A2 that get sprayed off each year. Other than that, it's an occasional plant along river banks. Very impressive, the flower is about 3 foot across and it grows into the lower branches of trees. Wouldn't want to touch it though
I'm feeling angry and very concerned about this stupid man growing such a menacing plant and so I have just looked out the address and sent an email to the Government Environment Agency to ask them if they can do something about it. If I hear back from them I will post what they say.
Usually refers to someone who studied at Oxford university rather than someone who just lives in Oxford. Over here a Yale man would be someone who cuts door keys for a living
Today I heard back from the Environment Agency. Here is copy of their reply.... The situation concerned would not be within the Environment Agency remit. Where there is growth of invasive non-native plants in England it would not be reportable to ourselves, but we can provide advice for people who are trying to prevent such growth. How to stop invasive non-native plants from spreading - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk) If you have concerns or questions about the situation you indicated in your email, it may be of help to contact the following organisation. Non Native Species Secretariat Home » NNSS (nonnativespecies.org) Regards I have written to the above people to see what they might come up with (or not)
They are striking in appearance. The biggest flowers I've had are about 24 - 28 inches?? Mine would tower above me and grow above the level of the deck,so the flowers would actually bloom at eye level while sitting on the deck. Before we knew about them, Hubby used to whack them down with a weed wacker. It is very good that he usually was bundled up with coveralls. Now as soon as they start to show I go at their roots with a spade. I don't spray because of their location to the house and garden, but this year I am also going to pour some boiling water and vinegar on the roots - works on thistles so we shall see. They grow very fast.
I followed the link and read about this Pacnor. Crazy that is a hybrid between two trees that would never have otherwise cross polinated or been created, if not for a human bean. It should have come with a warning label.
