Hard to avoid the teenage germ factory when one is working with them. Hope you both feel better soon. It is that time of the year. :setf_018::smt114

I didn't know that i didn't need to use Camden tablet, i was just going by a book that i bought. Gooseberry and rhubarb wine sounds good. It's good to have some for cooking with but i haven't done it. Also your hubby to have some with dinner.

No garden today. Still sick. I think it's beginning to improve now. I made a nine day supply of dog food, which takes me about an hour, but today it took two hours.

@Melody Mc. the Swedish Chef is great! My favorite was the Spring Chicken episode.

How does one simply "make" dog food? It has become an interest involving 4 cats and 2 dogs. And if I can ever find that cat broth recipe for the lap happy ladies I will secure it in my safe.

My recipe originally came from "Just Food For Dogs". I do it this way because I can make a nine day supply. Supposedly the recipe was designed by a dog nutritionist.

    5 pound package chicken thighs
1 pound bag frozen cut green beans, thawed
1 pound bag frozen cut carrots, thawed
    8 oz spinach, thawed
    1 apple, cubed
    1 cup brown rice
    2 cups white rice

This shows most of the veggies, a bit different from what I do now. I use fresh veggies when I can.

I added to the recipe 1 pound cubed squash.
Also the recipe called for 8 oz chicken hearts and 8 oz chicken livers, but I make jerky from those as treats instead.

The chicken thighs are important due to taurine content. Taurine is important for dogs. Chicken breasts don't have it.

Step 1. Cook the chicken thighs overnight in large slow cooker with 3 cups water.

Step 2. Use 1 1/4 cup broth from the cooked chicken thighs to cook the 1 cup of brown rice in instant pot pressure cooker, 17 minutes, high pressure.

Step 3. Divide everything into half. Remove the bones from the cooked chicken thighs. When the brown rice is cooked, add half to the first half of deboned chicken thighs. Set aside the other half.

Step 4. Combine 1 cup white rice, half of each vegetable package, half of apple, 1 1/4 cup chicken thigh broth in instant pot. Cook on automatic rice setting.

Step 5. When that's ready, mix with the chicken thigh meat / brown rice, and portion into containers, one meal servings (for Rufus that is one cup per container). I use the slow cooker crock as a mixing bowl.

Step 6. Repeat with the remaining chicken thighs, same amount of broth, second half of the vegetables.

I put a three day supply in fridge, freeze the rest. I let the frozen ones thaw for two days before serving.

The reason for dividing the recipe in halves is my bowl and instant pot aren't big enough for the whole recipe.

I tried linking to the recipe but they seem to have converted to just selling the dog food. They used to sell supplements but I couldn't figure out what was in those so I don't use them.

I try growing as much of the vegetable part as I can.

The original recipe was white rice. I switched 1/3 for brown, because Rufus was constipated and the added fiber helped.

I tried just making it altogether in the slow cooker. It was OK but I thought it was too mushy. I could see doing it as a casserole instead of instant pot.

My vet said this recipe is fine and Rufus is healthy.

The meat that goes into dog food can legally be from animals that were sick, drugged, died before slaughter. Some is imported from places that don't have our standards. I like using human grade.

If I can find a link for the original recipe, I'll post it. This was all from memory.

@Daniel W i hope that you feel better soon and that's a good food recipe for dogs, they do well on it and great that your vet was pleased.

We used to buy a raw dog food for Berry when he was a puppy, it was frozen food delivered, the breader used it for hers so started off with that. It had ground up bones in it that our vet wasn't too sure about but we kept him on it for a while and mixed it with a good dry puppy food.
I liked to use it because always had trouble getting puppies to eat the dried by itself.

That stuff looks very healthy for Rufus. Heck, just call me Fido and pass a bowl of it over this way.

I used to make similar dinners sometimes for my dogs, and intended to dry some fish for them too. Dogs adore fish. Lost the dogs now though, so there's no need at the moment.
Daniel here's a bunch of something to make you feel better :smt045[IMG]

I'm just chilling, out watching the football on TV, feeling quite pleased with myself.

In the last few weeks I've fixed the slow leak in the central heating, had the faulty electric shower changed, bought and attached a soundbar to the bottom of my TV. Had a new hub installed as my laptop had lost the wi-fi connection and renegotiated my Virgin media contract, so instead of losing my monthly £12.50 loyalty bonus this month, I'll now be paying £2 a month less than what I'm presently paying, for the next eighteen months.
