this is a view of the whole plant, rather than a leaf (which looks partially developed possibly). I usually only see this plant around (and in large numbers when I do see it) in very isolated rurual regions. Anyway, here is a view of the whole plant rather than just the leaf. Doesn't it look intimidatingly illegal? It's growing everwhere off the side of the road if you look hard enough.

Does this change anyones minds who had commented earlier, and/or there any new bit of info. I might need?

    Thanks,

    Paul.

Mallow is a possibility, I had one last year and the leaves sorta resembled the ones you're showing (except they had a reddist tint to them).
However, I've been growing a Texas Star Hibiscus for a few years, and everyone always says the leaves look like those of a marijuana plant.
I'm about equidistance between Houston and Beaumont and haven't noticed any TX Stars growing around here in the ditches or on the side of the road. BUT.... it's highly possible since they put out a TON of seeds and the birds could be spreading them around? Maybe not blooming because of the lack of water?
Have you seen any of them in bloom?

Good afternoon, could it be Ricinus or castor oil plant, there are burgundy colours too, grow around rubbish tips and un cultivated land, the seeds are very poisonous.....if it is Ricinus.

I have had a Hibiscus with 'those' leaves. Always figured one of our neighbors would either turn me in to the Narcs or bits of my plant would disappear as they started smoking it.
