Mart, I read that about KW in Vegetable gardener's bible, so this year I will plant extra and see how it goes. I only freeze tomatoes and they usually last me until I get next season's crop. This year I am planting extra squash and trying some new things that I have not grown before like cantaloupe, potatoes and onions besides the regular stuff. I can also try and freeze KW like you do (I just clean and bag the tomatoes no blanching and use them for sauces and gravy ) . BTW I measured my garden and it is 22.5'x18.5' and 12.5'x8' Therefore, anything that grows vertically is ideal for me.
Thanks Sjoerd, hope the same for your garden! yes do dry KW. I tried them first time last year and loved the results. And pole types work best for me anyway due to the limited gardening space.
I have plenty of an old line cantaloupe seed if you would like some. These have been saved by the same family for years. Sweetest I have ever eaten. Let me know.

I save the seeds from them each year. Its about time to get the seeds in the ground so just PM me your address and I will get them in the mail. I am doing mine today.
Its not about research but experience proves that all those plants grows in one season are good companions, just there may be fault in the allocation of place according to plant need, keep this in mind next time
I read that potatoes and tomatoes and squash attract the same beetle. Therefore they should never be planted near each other. I have a Companion vegetable list hanging inside the door of the tool / seed / glove cupboard. I usually refer to it before planting. LOL May be wasting my time, but , oh well.
That really doesn`t make much sense. Do they think that a potatoe bug or a squash bug wouldn`t travel 10 feet to my tomatoes? They aren`t too smart whoever wrote that. And its much easier to spray everything if close together. Just walk down the row and back up the next one.
Well, I have planted squash within 2 feet from potatoes, we'll see how it goes. Mart, I got the seeds yesterday and I have already planted them. Thanks again, I will keep you posted about the progress
Actually there are several plants that should not be companions, you can find lists of them by doing a Google.com search for bad companion plants. There are some plants that have very aggressive roots systems that will take up all the water, nutrients and space they can get...killing plants around them. Some actually change the chemistry of the soil for their own purpose but causing plants around them to suffer or die. Ever seen the term Juglone Tolerant in regards to a plant? That means they will survive being planted near Walnut trees, many plants will not. They will be fine,,thats where mine were last year. Just keep them sprayed or dusted,,you have to do that no matter where they are planted. Glad you got them. You planted all of them ? That would supply the town with cantaloupe.
Thanks Toni No no Mart, I just planted four seeds . I am saving the rest for next season. My garden is small and all the plants are in close proximity; so it may not be a good idea for me to save the seeds from this year's fruits. Next year I will plant them far apart from cucumbers, squash and other melons for seed saving .
Oh ! I plant three seed per hole every 4 feet in mine. If you have another spot available,,,wait about three weeks and plant a few more. That way they will be staggered and you will have cantaloupe longer in the season. Oh and don`t overwater them they need a little dryness once they start producing. That concentrates the sugars for a sweeter melon.
