I just got two pie pumpkins at the grocery, and I was wondering if the seeds would be viable. The pumpkins are good and firm, and the seeds are white (if that makes any difference). If I clean,dry, and store the seeds until next spring, what are my chances of getting vines? Your advice is needed, since I've never grown pumpkins.
The seeds WILL grow, but not necessarily the same type of pumpkins. It all depends on what they were pollinated by. You MAY get lucky and get Pie Pumpkins. If you are depending on getting a certain type of pumpkins, I would buy seed.
Normally the cross pollination will not show up till the second year. ie,, this years pollination will show if seeds are saved and planted next year. And pumpkins will cross with several types of squash. But after all that is said,,those crosses are delicious. Just not for pies or at least I didn`t try pies.
I have saved the seeds, after removing all the "gunk" attached to them, and letting them dry on the kitchen counter for a couple of days. I'll plant them next spring and see what we get! Thank you for your advice and information. Gardening is a constant joy and surprise to me, even after almost 40 years of it! :-D
One year I plowed under pumpkins, squash and zuchinni. A while later when all the seeds came up from that mish mash I had the strangest looking vegetables in my garden but boy were they good. Not quite a squash or a pumpkin but similar flavors mixed up. So if someone didn`t like squash,, no problem !
