I saw two about 3" leaves sticking out of the ground.The leaves are long stripes of green and dark purple with white tapering towards the root.They are about 5 cms thich and 3" long.I wanted to pull them out and replant them in a better place. As I did so, the leaves tore off. They had white elongated bulbs at the end. I planted these bulbs again in a potting mix. I read somewhere that bulbs store their nutrients in their leaves. So will these bulbs grow leaves/flowers again this year? Also, I found light brown fat bulbs in my yard which I put in a potting mix also. However they were not hard and looked soggy and rotten. Are these wasted? They are the size of medium sized onions. Thanks.
The ones you tore the leaves from should put out more growth during the spring. Whatever it is might not bloom this year since you might have pulled off the bud stem too. It is best to dig bulbs, not pull them. When they leaf out again, whether they bloom this year or not just leave them alone to die back naturally. They don't store the energy in the leaves but it is thru their leaves that the bulb stores energy for next years growth. Even if they do not bloom this year the green leaves will add color and texture to the garden. For the other bulbs you found in the yard, I would plant them in a pot and wait to see if anything sprouts. If they do then this fall you can put them in the garden, if they don't then throw them away.
