My son's wedding

Category: Random Stuff | Posted: Sun Sep 21, 2014 1:57 am

My youngest son, Ben was married on Sept. 12th. It was an outdoor ceremony at the Sunken Gardens, which is a city garden full of gorgeous annuals that are designed in themes to create a beautiful colorful sight.
It was a pretty day, had some rain in the morning, but it cleared off and was not too hot for us. The flowers are stunning. My pictures will not do it justice.
It was a small ceremony with just immediate family. Afterwards there was a dinner and dance which was a whole lot of fun. So happy for their wonderful little family!

Colorado flood recovery 2013

Category: Random Stuff | Posted: Sun Oct 13, 2013 8:12 pm

I just returned from a week in Colorado. It was emotionally and physically exhausting!! I had to go out there to help my mom. We have a family home near Estes Park, and it was severely damaged by the recent flood. We will have to tear it down, the foundation is not safe. So, the future is not certain, but we'll decide how next to proceed. We have 3.5 acres, and there is another spot on the land that would be a perfect location to rebuild.
It was sad to see the destruction and aftermath of this historic "500 year flood".
I have to say, the people of Colorado have been strong and are picking up the pieces, cleaning, and getting roads repaired. It will be a long time until it is back to the beautiful way it was.
My mom lost a lot of furniture and household items. It has been extremely hard on her. She was displaced and staying with friends and neighbors since Sept. 13th!
I flew out there, helped pack up and then drove her back here to Lincoln. She has a home here too, so very fortunate!
we have a cool old stone barn on the acreage, which was not flooded, so we were able to fill it with the things we could save. I had to throw out so much! It was amazing to see what damage and destruction the waters did.
All this is so heartbreaking for my family, we will miss the cabin. But- we are so grateful for friends and family that have been so supportive and helpful!
We are not sure what the future will bring, but we will be back there to figure it out!! *sigh*

Finding out about drought tolerance

Category: Random Stuff | Posted: Sun Jul 22, 2012 8:58 pm

Another hot, hot day here in the central plains. We haven't had any measurable precipitation since June 23rd. The temperature has been 95°F
or above the past 2 weeks, with several triple digit days in there.
It's hot! It's dry!
My gardens are doing pretty well, mostly because I have lots of shade. I also really care, and have been paying special attention to keep my plants watered. I am especially watching the plants I put in this year; the little ones that need to be babied along their first year.
It has become my morning chore. Taking a stroll each morning to see how they are doing. The temps are not even dipping below 70°F over night, so not much cooling off for them.
It's interesting to see how different plants are surviving. I have 6 Heuchera that are not very happy, crispy leaves. They would be dead if not for me, their diligent caregiver! I have decided they need to be moved this fall or next spring to a shadier spot. (more room for sun lovers)
The 2 yr.old Lilacs quickly droop to show me they need a drink, as does the Azalea and Hydrangeas. The Astilbes are pretty mad, they are just hanging on, and I hope they will be able to rally when it cools off. Many plants seem OK still. Hostas, Hardy Geraniums, Rudbeckia, Coneflowers, Ferns, Heucheras, Salvia, Coreopsis are doing well.
I have moved several of the containers to a shady place under my big Sycamore so they don't burn up. That afternoon sun and 100 degree temps make it pretty toasty out there!. Ugh!
I still have to work, and while doing maintenance in other's gardens I have seen many plant fatalities. death by heat and lack of water. Neglect... so sad
I usually ask if I can drag the hose around with me while I pull weeds. Which, by the way are very drought tolerant!

It was absolutely Perfect!!

Category: Random Stuff | Posted: Wed Jun 27, 2012 1:55 am

The wedding was just wonderful. Everything turned out so great, could not have asked for anything better! Perfect weather, well behaved family and friends :), yummy food, and on and on...
I was so excited, happy and proud of my little girl. What a beautiful bride she was.
I did not take many pictures, I was too busy!
We did have photographers (a very clever, imaginative couple) who spent a big part of the day with Sarah while she got ready, then the wedding party, families, the ceremony, and the party. They were great to all of us. So, I am going to share when I get the photos they took.

This is Sarah with her brothers Coby and Ben, and me. They were all ready to head out for pictures, and I needed to go get dressed.

It took me a few days to recover and get rested. Now it's back to the real world. Back to work, the weeds did not stop growing!

Wedding weekend is here

Category: Random Stuff | Posted: Thu Jun 21, 2012 10:04 pm

We decorated the reception room this morning. Sarah is a very creative, clever girl who has been busy for many months putting this all together. It looks very charming. Lots of lace and crocheted doilies and tablecloths, glass vases and jars with candles in some, and tons of Baby's Breath. Birchwood rounds, barn wood boxes. It a kind of "country chic". Very simple and I love it.
The rehearsal is tonight (I need to get ready!) and the wedding is tomorrow early evening.
It has been so hot, humid and windy. Yesterday the sky was full of building clouds, and so windy. About 7 p.m. it finally let loose with rain. Woke up today with clear blue skies and fresh air. Suppose to be like this tomorrow. (I am thanking someone up above.) The wedding is outdoors on a lake adjacent to a fancy schmancy golf course.
It is called "Wedding Island" It will be beautiful. I am a proud and happy Mom!

A couple of our neighbors

Category: Random Stuff | Posted: Mon May 21, 2012 1:22 am

We try to go for a walk every day, even though it's just not the same without our dog Missy.
Anyway, we walk by this place frequently, and I get such a kick out of it. I wish my camera did it justice, it's so cute.
Over the past few years, we've watched the mini tree grow. It is now about 10 inches tall, and these two birds lounge beneath it in lawn chairs. I always think "I need to take a picture of that" so today I did!

Part of my job

Category: Random Stuff | Posted: Sat Mar 26, 2011 4:37 pm

Last week, I worked along with my fellow employees to create our display for an annual Home and Garden show. It focuses on outdoor living and drums up business for us every spring. We spend many hours getting ready. The boys set up an outdoor fireplace, with a paver block patio in front of it.

They also made a flagstone walkway and left the mulched area for me to fill in with plants. I had to buy the plants from our wholesale nursery, but there was not a lot to choose from as it is quite early days yet here in Nebraska. We won't be planting much before May. So, I chose an upright White Pine, a Mugo Pine, and a giant Pussy willow for the backbones, and used a Blue Star Juniper, Red twig Dogwoods, Ornamental Grasses, a new variety of Lilac called "Bloomerang", Heucheras, and Hostas. i found some blue Columbine in bloom as well as my favorite spring annual, Pansies for some color.

The Lilacs were blooming too, and oh, did they ever smell great!
I did a lot of talking to people who came out to the show to see what's new this season, and anxious to get outdoors again. So, 30 some hours later, the show was over and we had a few days of good weather to actually work.
I supervise the crews that do maintenance and mulching. It keeps me on my toes, especially in the spring!
Now, I am sitting indoors, and it is snowing for the second day. The columbines are sitting in my garage and will be mine to plant in my garden, someday soon.
I sure have to be patient in the spring!

Finding Bargains

Category: Random Stuff | Posted: Mon Feb 22, 2010 5:21 pm

The other day I decided to stop in a local thrift shop to search for snow boots for my growing -like- a- weed grandson. Well, no good boots, but you never know what you can discover in these shops.
I spent $8.00 for this picture. I love these Nuthatches. We like to decorate with pictures featuring birds and flowers. It measures (aprox) 24hx18w. The matting is a subtle (probably a bit faded) light sage green. Will go quite well with our colors! I'm not very fond of the frame, but Bob has already taken it apart, (and says it was very well put together) and he discovered the frame IS wood with that gold stuff painted on. So he is now sanding and removing that. We'll stain it a dark color that compliments the picture. Not a bad find!
