Blurred Memories

Category: Miscellaneous | Posted: Mon Feb 12, 2007 7:29 am

Manually photographed from ten year old photos (so the quality is poor), the first is of myself surrounded by model railway trackbeds and dirt, early into the build. The model buildings I'd made to that point are positioned below the ruined castle, as the start of a village.
The second is a miserably wet day (and there were enough of those). The unsightly handrails were necessary as kids were tempted to race around with the trains. It was a safety nightmare.

I still don't understand why it wasn't more attractive to visitors. I know my family would love to have seen it.

What a shame, it looks quite memorable for a kid to see that :( Thanks for posting the photos Pete, I appreciate it.

The reason it didn't work was that the tourists were always intent on primarily seeing the waterfalls just up the road. It was like a rat run.
They had to get to the falls and return in time to catch the train back down again.
No market surveying had been done to account for this - a big, big mistake.
It was always assumed that there were so many of them, even if only a small percentage came in, as a change of mind to going further on to the falls, it would work.
But they didn't.
The moral of this bitter tale is not to assume anything - no matter how high the odds are in your favour.

I would love to have helped build it! You are absolutely right re the demographics. Just because you build it, doesn't necessarily mean they will come.

I just would have loved to see it.My kids would have loved it also.I can see how
if the train wasn't scheduled to stop for long enough to view everything.
Thanks so much for the pictures Pete.
