Pond Edging

That's another job done.

I'm delighted with the new pond edging effect of cobbles, which I think has worked a treat. I had to raise the ones by the path a little to maintain a less dangerous flooding situation, and after refilling the pond checked that the excess water run off was still under the patio slabs as before.
I like the almost flushness of the pond to the surrounding terrain, and as I shot it this morning there wasn't a whisper of a breeze about, so the water is like a perfect mirror.
There are no fish in the pond at the moment, and any change in the water's condition through the cementing will be left now to restabilise as it's gradually replaced with fresh rainwater (- heaven knows there's been enough of that lately!)
If I do eventually add some fish I'll need a heron deterrent too.

That does the trick alright Pete, really fits in with the whole look of the pond. Did you run into any little snags using the method you mentioned before or did all go according to plan?

Now that's really lovely Pete. The water is like sheer glass and I love the way the trees are reflected on its surface.

The pond edging looks as though it was simply meant to be there doesn't it? It fits in so well with the pond and the rest of the garden. A job well done and definately something to be proud of.

Dodging the weather was the main problem. I started off with five milk bottles and as the days passed finished with eight, so it got quicker towards the end.
I had to guess where to put the wire loop through the liner so it didn't get too close to the final water level. If I misjudged it (probably on some) I don't know if it will seep through - if it does it should be at such a minimal rate it isn't worth worrying about. So far the water level hasn't gone down in 24 hours, so maybe it's fine.

Very nice looking pond. I love the reflection also. Must be quite relaxing to sit by.

Looks great, Pete. Do watch the pH tho with the fresh concrete leaching lime into the pond water.

Just lovely, Pete. I wouldn't think herons would bother a pond of that size, but perhaps your herons are smaller? Ours stand about shoulder-high and prefer saltwater. Will you use koi? I'm Madame Cheapo, and have found feeder goldfish to do a dandy job of keeping mosquitos away. You have inspired me to put a path 'round my pond, should solve the mowing troubles I've had!

Really beautiful, Pete!
I really like to the way your "cobblestones" echos the staccato pattern of the larger pavers,
I think it makes both elements look exactly right.

Herons here seem to be attracted to any reflection on the ground, no matter how small. Our variety might not be quite as large. There was one that was a nuisance where I used to live. The ponds there were only smallish but it used to land on the garage roof and then hop down for breakfast.
Also seagulls are known to pluck at goldfish, usually not even eating them. They just leave them scattered about.
I've seen a device advertised which squirts a jet of water triggered by the motion of the predetor. Maybe that'll be the answer. What I don't want is a net across it. I'd rather not have fish if it means looking through a net.
