The Welsh Heron

Category: Miscellaneous | Posted: Thu Mar 29, 2007 6:13 am

Just returned from a mini-break in Wales, staying at a friend's 100 acre sustainable pine forest. What an excellent few days! Walking the estate, (kilted most of the time), soaking up the beautiful rolling far reaching scenery high in the hills.

And of course time as well for playing some good old Celtic songs on the accordion...especially on my last evening, as we enjoyed the warmth of a roaring bonfire.

An excellent memento of my visit was a piece of wood found which highly resembled a heron. This now stands proudly (and snootily) beside my pond.

I wondered where you were Pete - now I know. Magnificent scenery and all that space - 100 acres of forest - absolutely fantastic!!! It looks as though the weather was good for your stay too. The tarn looks sooooo blue.

The piece of wood you brought back is exactly right for beside your pond and definately resembles a heron. What a great find. Are you going to put wood preservative on it to ensure it lasts?

Yes, I've been absent from the forum for a while. I thought I'd at least just keep my blog going though if anything is worth jotting down.
Some of the trees were very tall, and I would think more or less due for felling and replanting. For each tree felled, another is planted usually somewhere else on the estate.
I'll leave the heron to dry out properly and then probably treat it to some preservative and maybe wood hardener too. This should stop any of the looser fibres from further coming adrift.

The outdoors really does make life worthwhile. Beautiful countryside, beautiful wood.

Lovely pics, and the heron was a great find. Now I will have to go trudge the swamps for some driftwood.

I like your piece of wood. I pick up gnarly pieces of wood when we go walking. We haven't done that for awhile. Dooley

Good pictures, reflecting many moods. Rouses the Celtic spirit in my ancestral past. I love Celtic music.
