chopping and changing

Category: gardening and the art of life | Posted: Sat Oct 20, 2007 8:10 pm

I continued cleaning up for winter in the garden today. After much deliberation, I cut a eucalyptus tree down to about 18 inches from the ground. It was being overshadowed in every way by the eucalyptus beside it which is bigger, stronger and breathtakingly beautiful.
It is very hard I find to cut a plant or a tree, even when its for the best. I feel like I am playing God and may make a bad decision at the expense of a living plant.
Eucalyptus trees are amazing and among their talents is their ability to grow back from the roots. Hopefully this one will do that, and I will prune it to a low bush like shape so that it will contrast to the one beside it and have its own beauty.

I feel the same way when I cut a plant down Rosie! I get too attached to all my plants. I hope your little tree bushes out for you. Oh how I wish I could grow Eucalyptus here!

Oh, I hear you. I have debated cutting down a 'baby' stick-like maple tree that was planted in the back yard of our house by the previous owners. It is still a little stick but right now it is starting to look and act like a maple tree by showing some fall colours.
It is right next to another small oak tree that also was planted by the previous owners. I haven't been able to get rid of it either because I know the lady of the house planted them with great hope for the future. The family had been going through trying times and had to sell. I can't bear to cut them down- that would be killing them and their hope for the future. God has kept them growing and so will I. I would love to see a picture of a eucalyptus tree if you could post one sometime :)
