Peguin the Hermit Crab

Category: our animals | Posted: Thu Apr 19, 2007 3:24 pm

This is Peguin,Alan's hermit crab. I have no idea where Alan came up with Peguin for his name, leave it to a teenager!teehehe!!! His shell is painted blue with skulls and lightening strikes drawn on it. He is pretty cool looking!

Be very careful with hermit crabs! Although they seem harmless, they have claws that pinch and can reek havoc on your fingers! This happened while I was trying to get his photo. Guess he doesn't like to be photographed!lol! My finger has been cleaned and bandaged now!! OUCH!!!

To take care of him daily we have to make sure he has 2 little bowls of water- one freshwater and one saltwater. We have to add a little sponge to each bowl to add humidity to the air of his home. We feed him several hermit crab food pellets along with some dehydrated fruit that we add a little water to, to rehydrate it. We have to spray his sand and soil with freshwater in a mister bottle daily to help keep up the humidity also. We have to also make sure he has another shell that is bigger than his current one in his home because as he grows he will emerge from his current residence and shed his outer shell grow any lost claws back and then move into the larger shell.
Well as you can guess Mom does most of the daily routine and Alan gets to say Hey he is mine!!LOL!!
You have now had your animal nature lesson for the day!lol!!

My boys had hermit crabs but I didn't take care of them. I do remember looking for bigger shells though. Dooley

Aww he is so cute...but yet pinchy,OUCH.Sounds like it takes alot of work to take care of him.Cheyenne has her little turtle and pit and I have to take care of them for her.Now she wants a hamster.I told her until she can learn to take care of what she already has she won't be getting anymore pets.

Ouch that's some pinch Penguin administered to you Julie - I'll bet it smarts a bit!!!!

My 24 year old daughter has a four foot tank of tropical fish, a Western hog nose python, two gerbils and a pet rat - guess who looks after them all - yep poor old mum. We're obviously far better at TLC than our children. LOL I won't show her your piccies as she's bound to want to add a hermit crab to her list of pets and I've quite enough to look after!!

Did I mention I'm afraid of crabs, not joking here. All those legs on something much bigger than a spider. NO THANKS!

I do like the painted shell though Julie ;)

That is so cute. The only hermits we have is in the sea, plenty of them so maybe we should try too. They are way smaller so they will not draw blood so quickly, if they draw blood at all. We watch them fight over shells in the shallow water. Could you tell more on your crab? Where is he from in nature that he needs fresh and salt water?
