I think he is a giant Moth

Category: I think this is a Moth on my blooms | Posted: Sat Jul 28, 2007 6:40 am

I found this giant on my cleomes late this afternoon. He reminds me of a hummingbird and almost as big.I hope Bethie comes along or someone who can tell me is it a Benefical Bug and what it really is
and if he turns into a Caterpillar

He was on these flowers for a long time going from one to another flower.

He had a long snout like a hummingbird beak.

He was sipping nectar as if it were a cola.

Then away he went.

Glenda you certainly weren't far out when you said it looked like a hummingbird because it's actually a Hummingbird Hawk Moth and harmless.

I'm glad he/she let you taken its photograph before it flew off as they are very attractive insects.

Thanks you all. I could not have ever killed anything that pretty .I just stood and snapped pitures and marveled at how graceful he/she is. He must have been attracted here by the Moon flowers that are blooming and already got all their nectar.I hope lots show up.I would never tire of watching them.Hummers have been sipping as well but those fellows are way to fast for me to fet a picture.

Fantastic! I miss all the beautiful critters in those parts. I don't think I've ever seen a hummingbird moth in the Northwest.
