Red vs. Clear

Category: Just Stuff | Posted: Fri Jun 15, 2007 7:56 pm

Today it was to hot to do much work in the yard so I worked with the bird feeders. I bought bird seed a couple days ago but didn't get the feeders filled. I only filled two with seed today, we have a wide assortment of birds that feed and enjoy the bird baths.
Last week I filled the hummingbird feeders with nectar I bought and diluted, it was red, and the hummingbirds all left. So today I mixed up my own and did not add the red color. I washed out all the feeders anf filled them with the clear nectar. Now I hope all the humming birds come bac. We also have three or four squirrels that eat out of the flat feeders and a family of rabbits that eat under the feeders on the ground. Did I tell you we have Fred, a little beagle hound. Now it is really exciting when we walk a walk and go out the front door. He likes to chase away the rabbits, squirrels, other dogs (big or little) and the occasional cat.
My husband watered all the flowers and the little tree while I worked with the feeders. I guess tomorrow we have to work with the flowers as it is 90 degree and I am going to sit by the air conditionor. Wannabe

Do let us know if the hummingbirds come back to the feeders now you've filled them with clear instead of red nectar.

I don't like the red coloring, but the hummers visit just fine with a red plastic flower thing to suck the nectar out of.

You know that I put a drop of color in mine. When I first started feeding them the recipe that I found said to put in a drop of red. I also put in a drop of red and one of yellow for the orioles. My problem is keeping them filled. I guess one of my chores tomorrow will be to bring them all in and clean them good and refill them. Ants and bees also love them. Dooley

Would you believe the hummingbirds are back? I guess these around here don't like the color red. Wannabe

I'm glad your hummingbirds are back. I got my feeders all cleaned and filled. Cleaned and refilled Chance's waterbowls, too. She has several as it is hot here and I don't want her without water. Cleaned the food bowls, too. Dooley
