It's a good year for Clematis

Hagley Hybrid & Multiblue

Hagley Hybrid from the other side of the fence

My vegetable garden is doing well also, with the exception of the beans I tried to grow in a shadier area. One bean in three rows came up! With all the rain, the seeds just sat in the ground and rotted. Luckily, the pole beans next to the trellis did grow. I'll be trying carrots, broccoli, and lettuce in that area next.

Here's my potatoes and strawberries. I realized I planted the potatoes too close together, so I'll have a bunch of baby potatoes, but that's ok. This is my first year growing potatoes.

The corn also came up just fine. If only I had more space in full sun.

I've also planted tomatoes and peppers, all of which are doing well this year.

Shade Garden

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Sat Jun 07, 2008 10:04 pm

I finally got the trees eradicated from the shade garden today. This garden has ferns, daylilies, a few roses, peonies (on the edge/gets some direct sun), coneflowers, and others. Now that I've got it all cleaned out of trees, I see some open spots to fill!

June 5th Walkaround

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Thu Jun 05, 2008 11:13 pm

Enough rain already! It's just a mud pit here, so I can't really work in the gardens at the moment. But, the overcast skies were helpful for picture taking. Several new things are blooming today.

Part of front lawn

Probably New Year Rose

Betty Boop

Nelly Moser

Duchess of Edinburgh on the arch

Example of stepping stones that have the sedum ground cover filled in already.

I have no idea what this one is, could be Lowell Thomas as I recall buying one at some point.

June 2 Blooms (graphic heavy)

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Tue Jun 03, 2008 2:25 am

Good day for first blooms on many plants!

Duchess of Edinburgh

Fourth of July

Another Iris (unknown variety)

Going to be dividing many hosta in the fall, they're getting huge.

Don Juans that I failed to prune, kind of wild this year.

Harlequin Honeysuckle continues to put on a show

All the hostas I divided and transplanted a few years back. I have an idea to plant the entire back garden with these around my roses to help control the weeds. Would be kind of crazy, but would look nice and lighten my work load quite a bit.

What I have to show for a day's work

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Mon Jun 02, 2008 2:42 am

I have two areas that have received nothing but neglect for the last two years. These are the areas you don't see when I post photos. I couldn't stand the mess any more, so I decided to shovel prune all the trees that didn't get pulled when they were young, and cleaned out the blackberry patch. Nothing hurts worse than going to pick a berry and catching a thorn off a dead branch from years' past. It was quite a hassle to eradicate all the weeds and trees, but will be well worth the effort later in the year.

Most of this....

Came from here....

Since I was left with a pretty blank slate, it didn't take long to take a trip to the local nursery to start filling in the holes.

Small projects never stay small

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Sat May 31, 2008 1:31 am

My small projects always seem to grow. Since I was filling in between the stepping bricks, it seemed silly to leave grass on the garden side of the bricks, so I took it out today. I transplanted some stonecrop and filled in with some red petunias left over from another project. It will look nice when it fills in. Sure beats having to mow or weedwhack that small section of grass, hubby will like it when he sees it. LOL (If not, too late now)

Today's small jobs in the big picture.....

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Thu May 29, 2008 8:41 pm

I'd be the first to admit that I may have planted more than I can handle. I actually ripped out an entire garden and seeded it back to grass a few years back. However, if I do a few smaller things each day, somehow most things get done. Didn't have to work today, so got a few more things done than usual (and it didn't start raining yet).

Today I worked on transplanting tall plants that didn't end up in the back of gardens where they belong. This is what happens when you plant one garden, then expand that garden later, plant heights end up wrong. So, I transplanted cone flowers today, and dug a bunch of them up from areas where they had taken over where they weren't welcome.

Next, was time to trim back the trumpet vine, dh was tired of getting poked in the eye when he mowed the lawn. Also staked a trellis that had started falling over due to the weight of the clematis vine. Needed to get that done before storms come in this evening.

Finally I decided to start working on the stepping blocks out front. Continued dividing and transplanting sedum to fill in the spaces between the blocks. Luckily I have plenty of established plants to divide. The areas filled in were transplanted a few weeks ago.

Memorial Day Blooms

Category: Pianolady's Gardens | Posted: Mon May 26, 2008 7:22 pm

Ds graduated yesterday & the big party went well. We packed our things up a bit early and got home, as that big storm front came through the midwest yesterday. No tornado or major damage here, just a few more tree limbs down here and there.

Sun is finally out today, so I got outside to enjoy a few new "first" blooms of the season. So many things about ready to burst out into blooms, but not quite yet!

Harlequin Honeysuckle
(although the variegation seems to be disappearing over the years)

Variegated Weigela

First rose bloom of the year, may be Therese Bugnet
