    Someone will be along shortly that can help you ID the plant. Looks like some type of palm to me.

    BTW, weclome to the Stew from Lufkin, Tx. What part of TX are you from? I would guess the coastal area!!

    I think I found it, it's Alpinia zerumbet Shell Flower or Shell Ginger, an evergreen perennial.

    Read about it on Wikipedia.

    I had this thought it might not be a palm but a big, evergreen perennial. Then I checked my trusted "The Royal Horticultural Society Gardeners' Encyclopedia Plants & Flowers from 1994, and there it was. :D

    yup it is a ginger. saw it everywhere in taiwan. i loved the blooms and brought a root with me... but after a while, it just died... weather in romania much too different than what it needs...
    cool bush. not sure how u can trim it... unless u cut it all down to the ground and let it come back...
    :)
