We had this cabinet setup built for a rear projection TV but it recently died on us so we bought a flat panel replacement. The width of the new TV is perfect, but the height was almost cut in half and has created quite a bit of empty space (marked by yellow). Here are the problems. The height of the TV is a few inches too much for creating a bottom set of cabinets that are in line with the ones on the left and right. Also, the light wood for the cabinets was ordered custom and would be impossible to get to create an identical colored cabinet. So...any suggestions? We have a carpenter who could build something in there but we are having trouble coming up with decent ideas.
How about some indoor plants? The space will be open and the difference in height between that space in relation to the two cabinets on either side wouldn't be noticeable. Also, if you paint the inside of that area black it will coordinate with the other black areas and show off the plants to their maximum. If the wood on the inside of that space is the special order light wood, maybe your carpenter could create faux walls and bottom for that space that could be painted black and fitted over the special wood.
Thanks for the quick reply! That sounds like a great idea. Low cost too. What types of plants/planters would you suggest? The walls are light colored but I will look into getting them painted since I agree that black makes more sense down there
I would make it an open shelf and use baskets as drawers. That way the height is not an issue, and you gain some extra closed storage. This will also give it an great organic element without destroying the design integrity you have with all the clean lines.
