I bought a basil a few weeks ago, and now it is flowering. I thought I read somewhere that when herbs start to flower and set seed that they'll taste bad, is it true? Or can I still use it?

You should pinch the flowers off and still use the basil. When it sets seeds it thinks it's done it's job and either dies or tastes bad. If you keep pinching the flowers off and use the leaves it will keep growing and get bushier. Basil smells so good and tastes great on spaghetti or in any tomato dish. I have three plants now. dooley

Thank you for the advice Dooley, I'll go do that now before it gets too hot out!

hi Melissa. When my basil starts to flower I cut off the flower about an inch below where it starts then I cut off all the extremely small leaves at the bottom of the plant. For me it creats a very bushy plant that produces several leaves. I have found it very important to remove the flowers asap as it makes the basil taste horrible in my opinion if you dont remove them.
