Grandmother's china, Schumann ( photo / image / picture from Cayuga Morning's Garden ) Flip side ( photo / image / picture from Cayuga Morning's Garden ) This is the plate, approximately 12" across. Notice how it is labeled 'War Zone' in the back? I suppose my grandmother & aunt were collecting this china in the '40's.

Hi CM. Congrats you managed to reduce the pic sizes. That is a very pretty plate and it has to be said that most German porcelain is very good all round. Its a familiar pattern layout with the border round and centre decoration - much used everywhere including here in UK. Is the pattern hand painted - looks as if it could be. Would love to see some more pieces. Syd.
Very pretty pattern...do you just have the one piece or a whole set? Are you going to use them? Such a nice remembrance of your Grandmother.
Thanks Mart, that website was helpful. Thanks too to Barb, Netty, Sherry, 2ofus, Eileen. I cherish this china & use it for holiday dinners only. Thanks in particular to Sydney as he helped me figure out how to post the photos. I do have more pieces in "the set" but this is what is odd. They are from 2 different manufacturers: Schumann & Rosenthal. I know my aunt added to the set over the years as she found pieces. I don't really know which was the original set from my grandmother. When I get home tonight, I will post some photos of the Rosenthal china. The patterns look very similar & both are called 'Dresden'something. 'Dresden Art' or 'Dresden Flowers' or some such.
I have Lenox and Haveland and my sister has exactly what you have.... it feels so good to hold in your hands....
Mart, yes that makes sense. The patterns are so similar it is hard to tell them apart until you look at the back. Here are some more photos: 2 plates: 1st is Rosenthal, 2nd is Schumann ( photo / image / picture from Cayuga Morning's Garden ) Rosenthal ( photo / image / picture from Cayuga Morning's Garden ) Schumann ( photo / image / picture from Cayuga Morning's Garden ) Backs ( photo / image / picture from Cayuga Morning's Garden ) Rosenthal ( photo / image / picture from Cayuga Morning's Garden ) Schumann ( photo / image / picture from Cayuga Morning's Garden ) I guess I would like to figure out which was the original set that my grandmother had & which was the set my aunt added to. That is, assuming my grandmother wasn't just buying china piecemeal.
Hi CM - all. All very lovely and the very similar patterns from two different makers is not surprising really - there was much copying of patterns and pattern names in the Porcelain and Pottery worlds. Likewise the word Dresden appears on patterns which were made here in UK. For good examples of copying here take the Willow and Asiatic Pheasant patterns - just about every Pottery had a go at them - the over all basic pattern being very similar but with those little differences such as the shape of the birds for instance or perhaps the number of men on the bridge. As far as I am aware Dresden apart from being an area/City (NOT a maker) the word refers to the style of decorating and not to a particular factory i.e. "The Dresden Factory" - theres several there I believe. Ref transfer wares - here there was/is such a thing known as clobbering - the basic pattern in put on by transfer and them certain parts of it (perhaps flowers and leaves) are painted in by hand - this would include within the border. Alternatively the border could be transferred and the central area hand painted - all very attractive whatever way. A very interesting read whether book or PC is the story of how Meissen originated - all that time ago and still going strong today - beautiful. Syd.
