A creative idea Donna, I will be curious to see if the plants can maintain themselves with that amount of soil. Will you supply additional nutrients when watering? How will you support the plants/vines as the plants grow?

Jerry I was thinking along those same lines... is there enough soil and room for those plants' roots? I guess we'll find out soon.

I am also wondering whats going to happen when those tomato plants get 6 feet tall and cukes are running ? Tomatoes might not have room for roots.

When we went to Walt Disney World(WDW), there was an exhibit in Epcot that featured cucumbers grown without soil. While Donna's experiment is not soilless the WDW exhibit did show that the bottom leaves had been removed. I presume they did this because the leaves only drew nutrients from the available supply and contributed nothing to the cucumbers. It might be an Idea as the root system outgrows the space to eliminate excess lower leaves as only the cucumbers need the food.
