I just inherited this little guy and would like to know what it is, so that I can keep it in good shape. The one leaf that is growing well is about 6-7 inches in diameter. It has a brown sheath coming out of the soil, and about half way up the green stem comes out of the sheath. At the base there a few brown sheaths/stalks that look like they were chopped, or never grew. Any ideas? Sorry for the poor picture quality, it was a camera phone. Brandon

Hi BrandonSi :-D That looks to me like something in the "Prayer Plant" family (Marantaceae), probably a Calathea, but maybe a Maranta, they are quite closely related. All of them are very cold sensitive, and even hate drafts, They will barely tolerate temperatures below 50° F. It would like a bright location, but not direct sunlight. They make great bathroom plants (if you have a bright window there), because they love plenty of ambient humidity. I can't tell for sure, from the angle of the photo, but it looks like that may be in a shallow pot, which is usually best for them. They have shallow root systems, and if the pot is too deep, the soil will tend to become too wet, which they do NOT :-x like . . . but, :-? they don't like to go too dry, either - fussy little things, aren't they?
Prayer plant It does resemble the prayer plant. Probably why mine die... Tooo cold here....... Mine had darker insides in sort of tear drop shapes. b
