Back in September we planted our first ever garlic patch. Here is the story from start to finish. http://cappyandpegody.blogspot.com/2016/06/our-first-garlic-bed-from-planting-to.html
Thanks Philip it was our first attempt at planting growing and braiding. once I got the hang of it my sailor instincts took over and it was quite easy.
Fantastic harvest there. What a healthy crop. My garlic has suffered from rust and premature dieback but I am hoping to harvest around 50 heads over the next few weeks.
Good luck EJ we were thrilled with the yield we got from a 4x4 patch. I counted 99 bulbs and I found another I had dropped in teh yard.Bulb 100 is hanging from my computer light now.
We planted 6 per sq foot, in the 4x4 box and a few extra to boot. They grew so dense weeds didn't have a chance cept for around the edge and the ground stayed moist longer cause of the dense planting. We did not fertilize or anything but our soil was very rich and composty.
We took up all but one row of garlic this past week. It looks really healthy and medium large. We have one more row. We're waiting to harvest it because I planted it this Spring. I always planted in Autumn before, so this is a new method.
We harvested garlic scapes the other night. Sautéed them in butter & oil, threw in some pasta, salt, pepper, topped with parsley & parmesan cheese. Delicious! Surprisingly mild garlic flavour.
WE harvest the garlic scapes and the green onion shoots. The garlic is mild flavored and the green onion are pungent great in salads and such we cook with them as well.
The seed heads, are those the scapes? I have scattered them in various spots in the past, and now I find garlic growing everywhere.
